Sony and Honda reveal the new Afeela electric SUV

#Sony and Honda’s electric car brand, Afeela, is getting ready to launch an SUV in 2028. The company showed off an early prototype at CES in Las Vegas on 6 January, with plans to sell it in the US first.

The SUV is based on the #Afeela 1 saloon, which has just started production at Honda’s factory in Ohio. The main idea is the same, but the SUV will offer more space and be easier to live with, helping Afeela appeal to more buyers.

Afeela first talked about an SUV back in 2023 with the Vision S 02 concept. The new prototype sticks to that idea but looks much closer to a finished car. It’s basically a taller version of the saloon, with the same slim light bars, clean design and sloping rear roof.

While Afeela hasn’t shared many details yet, the SUV looks similar in size to the saloon. Expect it to be just under five metres long, putting it in the same class as the #BMW iX, #Volvo EX90, Lucid Gravity and Rivian R1S.

Under the skin, it should share the same setup as the saloon. That means a 91kWh battery, up to 300 miles of range, fast charging at 150kW and two electric motors producing 482bhp.

Honda handles the engineering and building, while Sony focuses on the tech. Like the saloon, the SUV will come with advanced driver assistance, a highly customisable infotainment system, smooth ride control and Afeela’s signature front “media bar” display.

Production is expected to start in about two years, but buyers outside the US will likely have to wait until around 2030. The saloon hasn’t even reached customers yet, with deliveries starting in California before expanding to Arizona and Japan. There are currently no plans to sell Afeela cars in Europe.

The saloon shown at CES was a near-production model from Honda’s Ohio factory. Prices start at around $90,000 (£66,000), and the #SUV is expected to cost just over $100,000 (£74,000), putting it right up against premium electric SUVs from Lucid and Rivian.
