Not only was this McLaren F1 recently spotted, it is especially remarkable as being one of five original F1 prototypes. This one is XP4, chassis 4 of 5.
It was originally finished in grey but was repainted blue by its first owner, Mr Bhatnagar, who is a successful audio equipment entrepreneur and introduced Burger King to New Zealand. He purchased it from McLaren and later sold it to a collector in California, where it has remained ever since.
XP4 was featured in a Top Gear episode back in 1994. Of the five prototypes, XP1 was destroyed during testing in Namibia, and XP2 was used as a crash test car and didn’t survive either which left the only three prototype chassis that are in existence today.
The current owner does drive it and occasionally brings it to shows, but catching this car in the wild is still a rare sighting and glimpse of McLaren history.
